Intrinsic, Extrinsic and Age-Related Staining

There are three main types of tooth discolouration that can cause visible changes to your enamel: age related staining, extrinsic and intrinsic.

Extrinsic Discolouration:

occurs when the outer enamel features stains originating from certain beverages, foods or lifestyle habits including: smoking, red wine and coffee.

Intrinsic Discolouration:

refers to the inner portion of the tooth known as the dentin becoming darker or more yellow looking. If a pregnant mother takes tetracycline antibiotics during the latter stages of pregnancy or if a child under 8 years old or younger undergoes a course of tetracycline antibiotics, this type of discolouration may occur. Excessive exposure to fluoride can also negatively impact the dentin within one’s teeth as well.

Age Related Discolouration:

The natural tendency for teeth to become less vibrant as we age and tend to take on a yellowish hue can be due to the normal aging process. Some individuals are more susceptible to this type of discolouration due to genetic factors.
